Crafting

From Shroud of the Avatar Wiki - SotA

Crafting

Crafting turns the resources of New Britannia into equipment, consumables, decorations, and components. Its skills form a supply chain: Gathering obtains raw materials, Refining prepares or cultivates them, and Production creates finished goods. The original Crafting Sigil established those three rings, though later additions—most notably Fishing—mean the current skill tree no longer matches the historical image perfectly.[1]

Crafting is more than knowing an ingredient list. The Avatar also needs the correct Recipe, station, tool, skill, and accessible materials. Equipment recipes add another layer because selected Crafting Components can change the finished item's inherited bonuses.[2]

The crafting cycle

Stage What happens Examples
1. Gathering Raw resources are obtained from resource nodes, creatures, fishing, or the world Ore, wood, hides, reagents, fish, and other raw materials
2. Refining Raw resources are converted or cultivated into materials suitable for production Ingots, timber, cloth, leather, food ingredients, and harvested crops
3. Production Refined materials, raw resources, and components become finished goods Equipment, potions, food, decorations, and further components
4. Improvement or recovery Eligible items are enhanced, repaired, or salvaged Masterworking, enchanting, socketing, repair, and salvage

The path is a network rather than three sealed boxes. Mining primarily feeds Smelting, but gems also feed Alchemy; Forestry feeds Milling, while wood and bark can appear elsewhere; hides support both Tanning and Butchery-related workflows. Check the actual recipe instead of assuming every resource follows only one path.

What a craft requires

Requirement Why it matters
Recipe knowledge Defines the accepted ingredients, tool, station, skill requirement, and output
Crafting Station Refining and Production recipes operate at the station associated with their discipline
Tool Each discipline uses an appropriate tool, such as a smithing hammer, carpentry hammer, tailoring scissors, mortar and pestle, or cooking pot
Ingredients Quantities and allowed substitutions must match the recipe
Skill Influences access and results according to the recipe and discipline
Producer Experience Supplies the experience pool used to train crafting skills

Release 28 improved Recipe Book navigation and added more information to the crafting-station interface.[3] See Recipe Book for current wiki guidance on documents, discovery, Teachable recipes, and Re-Teachable recipes.

Crafting stations

Refining and Production disciplines use dedicated stations. The Crafting Station page separates basic, expert, and founder station records and dynamically lists the stations associated with each skill.

When a recipe will not activate, check:

  • that the station matches the recipe's discipline;
  • that the required tool is present and usable;
  • that every ingredient and quantity matches;
  • that a substituted component belongs to the accepted family;
  • that the recipe is known or explicitly Discoverable; and
  • that its skill requirement and other restrictions are met.

Do not infer a station bonus from its appearance. Use the station's own page and tooltip; special and expert stations can have properties not shared by basic tables.

Crafting skills and advancement

Crafting skills use Producer Experience, separate from the adventuring skill pool. Successful harvesting, refining, production, and related actions can supply or consume producer experience according to the activity and skill settings.

The current Crafting Skills tree groups sixteen professions as follows:

Group Disciplines
Gathering Mining, Forestry, Field Dressing, Foraging, and Fishing
Refining Agriculture, Butchery, Milling, Smelting, Tanning, and Textiles
Production Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Carpentry, Cooking, and Tailoring

The historical Crafting Sigil places Agriculture in its inner Gathering ring and predates Fishing.[1] The current wiki skill tree instead lists Fishing under Gathering and Agriculture with Refining. This page follows the current skill-tree organization while preserving the sigil as historical context.

Crafting disciplines

Gathering

Discipline Primary activity Common destination
Mining Ore, gems, and salt Smelting and Alchemy
Forestry Wood and bark Milling
Field Dressing Hides, carcasses, and creature resources Tanning, Butchery, Textiles, and Alchemy
Foraging Reagents and wild resources Alchemy, Cooking, and Textiles
Fishing Fish and fishing resources Cooking and related recipes

Gathering uses skill-specific tools and can trigger Meticulous Collection. Consult the node, tool, and gathering-skill pages for exact behavior.

Refining

Discipline Typical outputs Common destination
Agriculture Harvested crops grown from seeds and water Cooking and Textiles
Butchery Processed meat, fish, and creature materials Cooking
Milling Timber, boards, poles, strips, and wooden components Carpentry and some Blacksmithing recipes
Smelting Ingots, sheets, wire, and metal components Blacksmithing and some Alchemy recipes
Tanning Leather and leather components Tailoring and equipment recipes
Textiles Thread, cloth, canvas, and cloth components Tailoring and equipment recipes

Release 50 expanded the five conventional refining skill trees—Butchery, Textiles, Tanning, Smelting, and Milling—with skills affecting refined-material speed, batching, and output.[4] Agriculture follows its own planting and harvesting workflow; optional fertilizer is not currently part of that workflow.

Production

Discipline Typical outputs and services Related guide
Alchemy Potions, poisons, scrolls, gems, jewels, enchanting, and socketing Enchantment, Gem, and Jewel
Blacksmithing Metal weapons, shields, heavy armor, jewelry, repair, salvage, and masterworking Armor Enhancement, Weapon Enhancement, and Jewelry Enhancement
Carpentry Bows, hafted weapons, wands, staves, furniture, repair, salvage, and masterworking Weapon Enhancement and Focus Enhancement
Cooking Food, drink, brewing, and pet food Cooking
Tailoring Cloth and leather armor, clothing, containers, repair, salvage, and masterworking Armor Enhancement

The Obsidian Forge supports specialized Obsidian equipment recipes outside the ordinary station flow.

Equipment crafting and enhancement

Crafted equipment is built in layers:

  1. The base recipe determines the item type and accepted component families.
  2. Each selected Crafting Component contributes its recorded Material Crafting Bonus.
  3. Eligible equipment can receive Masterwork or Enchantment modifications.
  4. Eligible items can be socketed with a Gem, Imbued Gem, Jewel, or Imbued Jewel appropriate to that equipment type.

The same raw material can produce different bonuses when made into a sheet, blade, binding, hilt, strap, or another component. Use the versioned comparison guides rather than choosing solely by raw-material name.

Equipment family Guide
Armor materials and complete armor workflow Material Crafting Bonus and Armor Enhancement
Melee weapons and bows Weapon Enhancement
Wands and staves Focus Enhancement
Rings, necklaces, and jewels Jewelry Enhancement

Salvage and repair

Salvage destroys an eligible item and may return scraps, patterns, components, or special materials according to the item and current rules. Crafted components, socketed items, and enhancement materials are not automatically recoverable merely because they were used to make the item.

Repair restores ordinary durability or, through specific recipes and materials, addresses maximum durability. Consult the item's repair recipe and current interface rather than assuming every production discipline repairs every item.

The Crafting Sigil

The historical Crafting Sigil.

The sigil visualizes the original three-ring dependency: resources move inward-to-outward from Gathering through Refining to Production, surrounded by the crafting creed. It remains a useful model even though the live set of skills has expanded beyond the original five-per-ring design.

Version and verification

Crafting recipes and component pages commonly record a lastseen release. That is the release in which the wiki record was checked, not necessarily the release that introduced it. It also does not guarantee that no later balance or recipe change occurred.

When the current client and wiki disagree, record the station, tool, ingredients, quantities, output, skill requirement, and game release. This makes the correction useful instead of merely replacing one uncertain value with another.
