Tanning
Tanning is a Refining crafting discipline that turns hides, leather scraps, curing salt, and special additives into leather and leather components. Its products feed primarily into Tailoring, with straps and other parts also used by Carpentry, Blacksmithing, and additional recipe families.
Material and component choice matters. Ordinary, Hardened, and Supple leather can become armor pieces, straps, and other parts with different recorded Material Crafting Bonuses on eligible equipment.[1]

What Tanning requires
| Requirement | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Tanning Station | Opens Tanning recipes |
| Tanning Knife | Primary tool used by Tanning recipes |
| Recipe knowledge | Defines ingredients, quantities, skill requirement, and output |
| Hide and secondary materials | Animal Hide, Leather Scrap, Curing Salt, Beetle Carapace, Suet, and other exact inputs |
| Tanning Proficiency | Base refining skill; advanced materials impose higher requirements |
| Producer Experience | Supplies the experience pool used to train Tanning skills |
The individual recipe is authoritative. Special leather is not a simple rename of ordinary Leather, and a strap, armor component, rug, dye, or trophy may require different inputs and skill levels.
From creature to equipment
- Field Dressing gathers Animal Hide and other resources from eligible defeated creatures.
- Tanning combines Animal Hide and Curing Salt into Leather. A separate scraps recipe can recover Leather using Leather Scrap, Animal Hide, and Curing Salt.
- Special recipes convert Leather with an additive into Hardened Leather or Supple Leather.
- Further Tanning recipes turn those materials into straps and other components.
- Tailoring or another production discipline assembles compatible components into finished goods.
Release 50 added refining skills for larger batches, faster work, and chances at additional output.[2] These benefits apply to qualifying refined-material recipes, not automatically to every recipe performed at a Tanning Station.
What Tanning makes
| Family | Examples | Where it goes next |
|---|---|---|
| Refined leather | Leather, Hardened Leather, and Supple Leather | Armor, straps, clothing, furniture, and other components |
| Straps | Ordinary, Hardened, and Supple leather straps | Armor, belts, foci, weapons, and other compatible recipes |
| Armor and utility components | Recipe-specific leather pieces used by Tailoring and other disciplines | Crafting Component and the individual recipe |
| Scrap recovery | Leather from qualifying Leather Scrap recipes | Re-enters the production chain |
| Rugs and mounted trophies | Animal rugs, mounted creature heads, and fish trophies | Decoration and trophy item pages |
| Dyes and specialty products | Recipe-specific dyes, hides, and decorative goods | Dye and Tanning recipes |
These families are navigation aids. The generated recipe list contains decorations and trophies as well as refined materials, so ordinary leather substitutions and refining bonuses do not apply universally.
Choosing leather components
The refined material name alone does not describe the finished bonus. Leather used directly can differ from a strap or other component made from it.
| Goal | Material tendency in the versioned records |
|---|---|
| Basic light-armor resistance or avoidance | Compare ordinary Leather components by exact armor recipe |
| Physical offense | Hardened Leather components commonly favor Base Weapon Damage |
| Weapon critical chance | Supple Leather components commonly favor Weapon Critical Chance |
| Wand or staff construction | The exact cloth or leather strap accepted by the recipe; see Focus Enhancement |
| Leather armor | Every accepted leather piece, binding, strap, and other component in the exact recipe |
Use Material Crafting Bonus for versioned comparisons and Armor Enhancement, Weapon Enhancement, or Focus Enhancement for the finished equipment family. A displayed release is the component record's verification date, not necessarily its introduction date.
Skill tree
The recorded Tanning tree contains four innate refining skills and no active skills.

Tanning Proficiency records Release 28; the specialized refining skills record Release 50. Check current tooltips and recipe classification before relying on historical numerical effects.
Batching, speed, and efficiency
Batching changes how many qualifying operations can be queued together; it does not remove the ingredients required for each operation. Swift refining reduces time. Efficient refining records a chance for bonus material rather than a guaranteed extra result.
Being listed under Tanning does not alone prove that all three bonuses apply. Verify that the current interface classifies a trophy, dye, special component, or conversion as a refined-material recipe before planning a large batch.
Recipes
The generated Tanning recipes index is populated from recipe data stored on individual item pages. Edit the item or recipe record rather than manually adding a row to the index. Its broad verification banner means individual records and current-client testing remain important.
Some recipes are Discoverable, Teachable, or Re-Teachable, while special materials may be explicitly not teachable. See Recipe Book and the individual recipe's current status.
Version and verification
A lastseen release says when a wiki record was checked, not necessarily when it was introduced. Current records for basic leather, special leather, straps, trophies, and dyes span many releases.
When testing Tanning data, note the game release, station, Tanning Knife, exact ingredients, skill level, batch size, output, bonus result, and component tooltip. Special-leather inputs, trophy recipes, and refining-efficiency behavior deserve particular care.
