Material Crafting Bonus

From Shroud of the Avatar Wiki - SotA

Material crafting bonuses

Material crafting bonuses are statistics inherited from the Crafting Components used to assemble equipment. The same raw material can provide different values when made into a sheet, binding, strap, blade, or another component, so choosing “Meteoric Iron” or “Bronze” alone does not describe the complete result.[1][2]

This page compares the recorded armor-component values and identifies the game release in which SotAwiki last verified each record. A version is a verification date, not a guarantee that the value remains unchanged. Check a newly crafted item's tooltip before committing rare materials.

Raw-material overview

These are broad tendencies across component families; the detailed component determines the actual statistic and value.

Family Material Common recorded emphasis
Metal Iron Weapon damage or armor resistance, depending on component
Metal Copper Weapon damage and critical chance
Metal Bronze Weapon damage, critical bonuses, and armor resistance
Metal Meteoric Iron Weapon damage and the strongest recorded metal armor resistance
Metal Constantan Weapon damage, spell offense, and Focus
Metal White Iron Armor resistance, Health, or avoidance, depending on component
Wood Pine Weapon critical chance
Wood Maple Weapon damage
Wood Crimson Pine Focus
Wood Grey Pine Weapon critical chance and avoidance
Wood Hard Maple Damage resistance
Wood Rock Maple Weapon critical damage
Leather Simple Leather Combat Dodge Modifier
Leather Supple Leather Dodge and weapon critical chance
Leather Hardened Leather Dodge and base weapon damage
Cloth Cotton Focus
Cloth Carapacian Spell critical chance
Cloth Fustian Focus

Quick recommendations

Goal Recommended primary material Why
Maximum recorded Armor Damage Resistance on crafted plate or chainmail Meteoric Iron Meteoric Iron Sheets and Coils of Meteoric Iron Wire each record +5% Armor Damage Resistance per component, the highest listed value. Meteoric Iron Bindings record +1.2% each.
Resistance with additional Health White Iron White Iron Sheets and wire record +2.5% Armor Damage Resistance and +5 Health per component; bindings record +0.3% resistance and +5 Health.
Resistance with some weapon damage Bronze Bronze Sheets and wire record +2% Armor Damage Resistance and +1% Base Weapon Damage per component.
Physical damage without defensive material bonuses Copper or offensive leather components Copper favors Base Weapon Damage, while Hardened Leather adds Base Weapon Damage and Supple Leather adds Weapon Critical Chance.
Spell-oriented armor Carapacian Cloth or Constantan Carapacian components favor spell critical chance; Constantan metal components combine Base Weapon Damage with Focus.

What should a maximum-resistance heavy armor set use?

For the material portion of a crafted set, use Meteoric Iron Sheets for plate or Coils of Meteoric Iron Wire for chainmail, plus Meteoric Iron Bindings wherever the recipe accepts bindings. That maximizes the recorded Armor Damage Resistance bonus among the standard metal choices.

This does not by itself identify the strongest possible finished set. The result also depends on the armor recipe and its component counts, the base statistics of each piece, Masterworking, Enchantment, Heavy Armor skills, buffs, and the distinction between numeric Damage Resistance and Maximum Damage Resistance. Material bonuses should therefore be compared on otherwise equivalent recipes.

Metal armor components

Sheets are normally associated with plate armor, while coils of wire are associated with chainmail. Bindings appear in several armor recipes. Values below are per component.

Material Sheet Wire Binding Last recorded release
(sheet / wire / binding)
Iron +2% Armor Damage Resistance +2% Armor Damage Resistance +0.3% Armor Damage Resistance R105 / R51 / R90
Copper +0.5% Base Weapon Damage +0.5% Base Weapon Damage +0.1% Base Weapon Damage R105 / R51 / R105
Bronze +1% Base Weapon Damage
+2% Armor Damage Resistance
+1% Base Weapon Damage
+2% Armor Damage Resistance
+0.2% Base Weapon Damage
+0.6% Armor Damage Resistance
R105 / R33 / R105
Meteoric Iron +5% Armor Damage Resistance +5% Armor Damage Resistance +1.2% Armor Damage Resistance R105 / R33 / R105
Constantan +1% Base Weapon Damage

+2.5% Armor Damage Resistance
+5 Health
+0.3% Armor Damage Resistance

The older general description that White Iron simply increases Damage Avoidance is not sufficiently precise for armor construction. The recorded sheet, wire, and binding components instead list Armor Damage Resistance and Health.

How component bonuses combine

An armor recipe may use several copies of its primary component and one or more secondary components. Each accepted component contributes its own recorded bonus. For example, the Plate Chest Armor recipe recorded in Release 105 uses ten Metal Sheets and one Metal Binding, while Epic Plate Chest Armor uses eight sheets, four bindings, and two cloth or leather straps. Those recipes should not be treated as interchangeable merely because both produce plate chest armor.

Because many records were last checked in older releases, calculated totals are best used for comparing otherwise identical recipes, not as a substitute for the current in-game tooltip. Values generated by masterworking, enchanting, exceptional crafting, gems, artifacts, and armor skills are outside this table.

Other equipment

Weapons, shields, wooden components, jewelry, and magical foci use additional component families whose values do not map directly onto the armor tables above. See:
