Smelting
Smelting is a Refining crafting discipline that turns ore and other resources into metal ingots, sheets, wire, bindings, blades, weapon heads, and specialized components. Its products feed primarily into Blacksmithing, with some also used by Carpentry, Tailoring, Alchemy, and other recipe families.
Material and component choice matters. Different metals—and different components made from the same metal—can contribute different Material Crafting Bonuses to finished equipment.[1]

What Smelting requires
| Requirement | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Smelting Station | Opens ordinary Smelting recipes |
| Smelting Tongs | Primary tool used by Smelting recipes |
| Recipe knowledge | Defines ingredients, molds, other tools, skill requirement, and output |
| Ore, metal, fuel, and secondary materials | Exact inputs vary by recipe; many recipes consume coal |
| Molds or other tools | Ingot Mold, Sheet Mold, Wire Mold, Blade Mold, Stone Chisel, or another item only where listed |
| Smelting Proficiency | Base refining skill; individual recipes and advanced skills may impose further requirements |
| Producer Experience | Supplies the experience pool used to train Smelting skills |
The individual recipe is authoritative. Do not add every mold or tool to every job, and do not assume one metal can replace another unless the recipe explicitly accepts that component family.
From ore to equipment
- Mining supplies ore, coal, and related resources.
- Smelting combines those materials into ingots or other refined materials.
- Further Smelting recipes shape metal into sheets, wire, bindings, blades, heads, and other components.
- Blacksmithing or another production discipline assembles compatible components into finished equipment.
- Eligible finished equipment may then receive masterworking, enchanting, socketing, repair, or salvage.
Release 50 added refining skills for larger batches, faster work, and chances at additional output.[2] The recorded skills apply to recipes classified as refined materials, not automatically to every recipe performed at a Smelting Station.
What Smelting makes
| Family | Examples | Where it goes next |
|---|---|---|
| Ingots | Iron, Copper, Bronze, Constantan, White Iron, Meteoric Iron, and other recipe-specific metals | Armor, weapons, jewelry, tools, and components |
| Armor components | Metal sheets, wire, coils, and bindings | Blacksmithing Skills and Armor Enhancement |
| Weapon components | Blades, axe blades, spear heads, mace heads, and other metal parts | Blacksmithing Skills, Carpentry Skills, and Weapon Enhancement |
| Jewelry materials | Ingots, wire, and recipe-specific metal parts | Jewelry Enhancement |
| Utility and decoration components | Fasteners, mechanisms, fixtures, and specialized parts | The individual production recipe |
| Artifact and upgrade recipes | Recipe-specific rarity upgrades and conversions | The individual item page |
| Obsidian components | Obsidian ingots, sheets, blades, and weapon heads | Obsidian Forge Recipes |
These families are navigation aids. Some entries on the generated recipe list are conversions or item upgrades rather than ordinary ore refining, and their listed station, tools, and ingredients still control.
Choosing metal components
An ingot name alone does not describe the final bonus. For example, a metal sheet can carry a different effect from a blade, wire, binding, or hilt made from the same material.
| Building | Compare |
|---|---|
| Plate armor | Sheets, bindings, and accepted straps |
| Chain armor | Wire or coils, bindings, and accepted straps |
| Sword or dagger | The exact blade family and compatible hilt |
| Hafted weapon | Its metal head plus the compatible wooden handle |
| Ring or necklace | The finished metal jewelry recipe and any eligible socketed jewel |
| Decoration, artifact upgrade, or utility item | The exact recipe; equipment bonus rules may not apply |
Use Material Crafting Bonus for versioned material comparisons, then Armor Enhancement, Weapon Enhancement, or Jewelry Enhancement for the relevant equipment family. A displayed release is the record's verification date, not necessarily its introduction date.
Skill tree
The recorded Smelting tree contains four innate refining skills and no active skills.

Recorded skills
| Increases batch count for Smelting refine materials recipes | |
| Adds chance to gain bonus materials for Smelting refine materials recipes | |
| Proficiency in Smelting | |
| Decreases crafting time for Smelting refine materials recipes |
| Skill | Recorded purpose |
|---|---|
| Smelting Proficiency | Raises Smelting level |
| Batching Materials - Smelting | Increases the permitted batch count for Smelting refined-material recipes |
| Swift Refine Materials - Smelting | Reduces crafting time for Smelting refined-material recipes |
| Efficient Refine Materials - Smelting | Adds a chance for bonus materials from qualifying refined-material recipes |
Smelting Proficiency records Release 28, while the three specialized refining skills record Release 50. Check current tooltips and recipe classification before relying on the old numerical effects.
Batching, speed, and efficiency
Batching changes how many qualifying operations can be queued together; it does not remove the need for every ingredient and tool. Swift refining reduces time for qualifying work. Efficient refining records a chance for bonus material rather than a guaranteed addition to every craft.
Because the generated Smelting catalog also contains components, conversions, and special upgrades, being listed under Smelting does not by itself prove that all three refining bonuses apply. Verify that the current interface classifies the job as a refined-material recipe.
Special stations and recipes
The Obsidian Forge in Hilt Fortress is a hazardous, location-specific station used for a restricted recipe set. It is not an ordinary Smelting Station, and its access conditions and instance behavior matter. See Obsidian Forge and Obsidian Forge Recipes before carrying valuable ingredients there.
Other Smelting recipes can convert or upgrade specific artifacts, trophies, dungeon items, and components. Follow their exact recipe records; ordinary ingot assumptions often do not apply.
Recipes
The generated Smelting recipes index is populated from data on individual item pages. Edit the item or recipe record rather than manually adding a row to the index.
Recipe documents may be purchased, looted, awarded, or traded where applicable. Some are Discoverable, Teachable, or Re-Teachable; others are not. See Recipe Book and the individual recipe's current status.
Version and verification
A lastseen release says when a wiki record was checked, not necessarily when it was introduced. Generated lists can mix records from widely separated releases.
When testing Smelting data, note the game release, station, tool and mold, exact ingredients, skill level, batch size, output, and any bonus result. This is especially important for alloy ratios, component substitutions, artifact upgrades, Obsidian recipes, and efficiency behavior.
