Cooking Skills

From Shroud of the Avatar Wiki - SotA

Cooking

Cooking is a Production crafting discipline that turns harvested, caught, butchered, purchased, and processed ingredients into food and drink. Prepared items can provide long-duration benefits to the Avatar, a tamed pet, or certain summoned creatures, depending on the item.

Cooking has a broad pantry and a deliberately simple skill tree: recipe knowledge and Cooking Proficiency govern production, while the finished food's own record defines its channel cost, duration, and effects.

What Cooking requires

Requirement Purpose
Cooking Station Opens the Cooking recipe interface
Cooking Pot Primary tool used by Cooking recipes
Recipe knowledge Defines ingredients, quantities, skill requirement, and output
Ingredients Produce, meat, fish, dairy, grain, seasonings, liquids, containers, and other recipe-specific inputs
Cooking Proficiency Base production skill; individual recipes may impose a higher requirement
Producer Experience Supplies the experience pool used to train Cooking Proficiency

The individual recipe is authoritative. Ingredients with similar names are not automatically interchangeable, and some recipes require processed items—such as flour, broth, butter, or a prepared base—rather than the raw resource.

From field to table

  1. Agriculture supplies crops and other cultivated ingredients.
  2. Fishing supplies fish, while hunting and Butchery supply meat and processed animal ingredients.
  3. Merchants, loot, gathering, and earlier recipes supply seasonings, liquids, dairy products, containers, and special ingredients.
  4. Cooking combines the exact listed ingredients at a Cooking Station.
  5. Consuming the result applies its recorded effects and occupies the number of food channels assigned to it.

This chain crosses several disciplines, so a missing ingredient may itself need to be grown, gathered, processed, or purchased. Use the item's recipe backlinks and vendor query where available.

What Cooking makes

Family Examples and purpose Where to compare
Meals and dishes Roasts, stews, pies, breads, seafood dishes, and other prepared foods Food
Drinks Alcoholic and non-alcoholic recipe-specific beverages Food and the individual drink page
Ingredients and bases Flour, butter, broth, dough, sauces, and other intermediate products Cooking recipes
Preserved or processed foods Dried, cured, smoked, or otherwise prepared ingredients and meals Individual item and recipe pages
Tamed-pet food Consumables whose recorded effects apply to tamed creatures Pet Food
Summoned-creature food Consumables benefiting the Avatar and a specified summoned creature Summoned Creature Food
Decorative or event recipes Cakes, seasonal foods, placeable items, and specialty products Individual item pages

These families are navigation aids. Not every edible item is crafted, and not every Cooking output provides a combat-oriented bonus.

Food channels and effects

The recorded food system gives the Avatar six food channels. Each food or drink uses a stated number of channels, commonly one to three. Several inexpensive foods can fill the same total capacity as fewer high-cost foods, so compare the combined channel cost as well as individual bonuses. The channel system was introduced in the 2020 food-and-drink update.[1]

When choosing food Check
Building a full meal plan Total channel cost does not exceed six
Comparing similar bonuses Magnitude, duration, channel cost, drawbacks, and ingredient availability
Preparing for a short encounter Whether a long-duration or rare recipe would be wasteful
Supporting a tamed pet The separate rules and recorded effects on Pet Food
Supporting a summoned creature Whether the item names the relevant summon on Summoned Creature Food

Food tiers historically grouped ordinary regeneration foods, stronger attribute foods, fantastical dishes, and special recipes with possible drawbacks.[2] Current selection should be based on the item's actual tooltip and versioned wiki record rather than its tier alone.

Consuming a new item may displace or conflict with an existing food setup when the available channels are already committed. Review the active effects before consuming rare food.

Items

Recipe planning

Before making a large quantity, check:

  • the exact output quantity and serving form;
  • whether an ingredient is consumed directly or must first be processed;
  • the required Cooking level;
  • whether the recipe is learned, discoverable, teachable, or re-teachable;
  • the finished item's channel cost, effects, duration, and any drawback; and
  • whether the food targets the Avatar, a tamed pet, or a specified summoned creature.

For a costly recipe, craft a small run first and compare the resulting tooltip with the wiki. This catches silent balance changes without turning a pantry's worth of rare ingredients into an outdated assumption.

Recipes

Main article: Cooking recipes

The generated Cooking recipes index is populated from recipe data stored on individual item pages. Edit the item or recipe record rather than manually adding a row to the index. The Food page separately queries recorded consumable effects.

Recipe documents may be purchased, looted, awarded, or traded where applicable. Some recipes are Discoverable, Teachable, or Re-Teachable; others are not. See Recipe Book and the individual recipe's current status.

Version and verification

A lastseen release says when a wiki record was checked, not necessarily when the recipe or food was introduced. The generated recipe and food tables can mix records from widely separated releases.

When testing a Cooking record, note the game release, station, tool, exact ingredients, skill level, output quantity, channel cost, duration, every effect, and target type. Food balance and pet behavior are especially important to recheck in the current client.
