Maximum Damage Resistance

From Shroud of the Avatar Wiki - SotA

This article needs verification. (Specific reason: Confirm the current client label, percentage calculation, stacking and cap rules, affected damage types, and the Physical Resistance Potion's current value and duration.)

Maximum Damage Resistance is the percentage limit on how much incoming damage Damage Resistance can remove from a hit. It works alongside the numeric Damage Resistance value: the game applies no more than the permitted percentage reduction, even when the character has enough Damage Resistance to subtract a larger number.

For example, 25 Damage Resistance with a 50% maximum can remove all 25 points from a 400-point hit, but only 20 points from a 40-point hit because half of 40 is 20.

The Physical Resistance Potion of the Obsidians records +10% Maximum Damage Resistance and +20 Damage Resistance for 120 seconds, balanced by -20 Magic Resistance. The potion was introduced as temporary physical protection at the expense of resistance to magic.[1]

Terminology history

The percentage cap was formerly called Damage Absorption. Release 28 retired that term and presented absorption as a component of Damage Resistance instead.[2] Some later notes still used the older wording; Release 53, for example, described Damage Absorption as “the cap to how much damage resistance can be applied in a hit.”[3]

Verification needed

  • Confirm the current calculation and terminology in the client.
  • Determine which physical and magical damage types are governed by this limit.
  • Record how multiple bonuses stack and whether a global cap applies.
  • Confirm the potion's current values, duration, restrictions, and interaction with other resistance effects.
