Seafaring

Seafaring is an adventuring skill school for life aboard ship. It is built but not yet available to players. Boats themselves opened with build 358 on November 5, 2026, and need no Seafaring skill to use.[1]
The planned school contains five skills: Navigation, Strong Swimmer, Sea Legs, Hull Patching, and Crew Drill. A November 1 development review states that while the school is switched off it cannot be learned and its effects do not run.[2]
Planned skills
| Skill | Planned role | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation | Intended to increase map-reveal distance and combine with the Scroll of the Wayfinder's Eye and a crow's-nest lookout. | No effect while the school is switched off.[2] |
| Strong Swimmer | Intended to improve the Avatar's ability in the water. | No effect while the school is switched off.[2] |
| Sea Legs | Intended to help the Avatar function aboard a vessel. | Cannot be learned or used. |
| Hull Patching | Intended to repair a damaged vessel with boards carried in the Avatar's backpack. | Cannot be learned or used. |
| Crew Drill | Intended to benefit crew members recognized as standing on a vessel's deck. | Cannot be learned or used. |
Exact tooltips, scaling, prerequisites, and icons should be documented only after the school is enabled.
What players can do today
Build 358 allows players to sail harbour boats, take the wheel, row with an Oar in each hand from a rowboat's middle seat, anchor, tie off, and cross zones with the crew. A harbour's boat returns to its berth about five minutes after it leaves.[1] Free ferries in Central Brittany, Kingsport, and Ardoris travel to the Ember Isles. None of these activities requires Seafaring.
See Sailing for current operating instructions and known limitations.
Planned shipboard interactions
The disabled school is designed to use the same server-side deck recognition as the boat system. Planned Hull Patching and Crew Drill effects require the character to be aboard rather than merely standing nearby.[2] Hull Patching is intended to consume boards from the caster's backpack, but it cannot currently be used.
The planned crow's-nest lookout bonus is also unavailable because no ship with a working nest is currently in service. When enabled, it is designed to double map-reveal reach for everyone aboard and stack with Navigation and the Scroll of the Wayfinder's Eye.[3]
Trainer
Honoria Strake, the navy captain in Smokehaven, is the school's intended trainer. Players can meet her now, but she cannot teach Seafaring while the school is disabled.
Availability history
The first steerable sailing prototype was built on October 24, 2026.[4] Build 358 subsequently opened harbour boats, The Great Sea, Smokehaven, and free ferries. It did not enable the Seafaring school. The switched-off labels for the school, sailable ship homes, crow's-nest bonuses, and damage-stage sinking remain current.
