Damage Avoidance is a defensive attribute associated with receiving glancing blows. A glancing blow reduces the damage of a hit rather than avoiding the hit entirely. The current chance, reduction, eligible attacks, and mitigation order remain under verification.
Historical behavior
Release 47 described a bug in which a glancing blow dealt roughly one-sixth normal damage before Damage Resistance, when it was intended to deal roughly one-third before armor on average.[1]
That note is useful historical evidence for the 2017 order and intended average, but it does not establish that every current glancing blow always deals exactly one-third damage or that the same resolution order survives unchanged. The former page's boss-build recommendation has therefore been removed pending current testing.
Relationship to other defenses
Damage Avoidance should be distinguished from:
- Dodge, which concerns avoiding a hit;
- Damage Resistance, which mitigates damage that reaches its calculation;
- Maximum Damage Resistance, the recorded percentage ceiling associated with resistance;
- Glancing Blow Chance, an item statistic that modifies an existing chance rather than simply adding the displayed percentage. Catnip's 2026 notes give the example that +5% changes a 10% chance to 10.5%.[2]
These similarly named statistics should not be combined mechanically without current evidence.
