Property Deed

The actual item in game, that is used to claim lots are named Deed, as of Release 102.

Ownership

Various Property Deeds can be obtained by purchasing them from the Crown Shop, purchased from other players, or even found occasionally in Supply Bundle (Blue).

Additionally, every account can receive 1 Row Property Deeds just for finishing the main quest in one of the 3 Outskirts and 1 Village Property Deed by completing the Episode 1 Main Quests. You can only receive these 2 Property Deeds one time per account.

Property Deeds are restricted to which specific type of Town they can be used in. Property Deeds with a PA (Place Anywhere) name can be placed in any Town in New Britannia. Property Deeds with a POT (Player Owned Town) name can only be used in a Player Owned Town or Player Run Town.

When a Property Deed is in a Players Inventory, you can right click on the Property Deed and select various Lot Deed Upgrade options.

Sizes

Lots come in six sizes: Row (smallest), Village, Town, City, Keep and Castle (largest). Each Holdfast, Village, Town, City, or Metropolis in the game will have a mix of lot sizes available. The larger the habitation, the larger the number of lots and the greater percentage of bigger lots available. For example, a Metropolis will have the greatest number of lots and the highest percentage of City-sized lots.

Upkeep

Lots have an in-game currency tax that must be paid or the lot reverts to being for sale and the Property Deed is returned to the owner. Backers at Ancestor level and above receive a tax-exempt Property Deed, but the lot can still revert after an extended amount of inactivity (5 months at Citizen level, + one month per tier above that).

The upkeep rates in gold are:

Row: 250 gold per day
Village: 500 gold per day
Town: 1000 gold per day
City: 2000 gold per day
Keep: 3000 gold per day
Castle: 4000 gold per day

One CotO will apply 300 gold in credit on a lot deed.

Reverting

Your house (and the contents) will be placed in your bank. Decorations will not be maintained when you place the house again on a lot.. This can be avoided by storing the house using the Property Manager before the lot reverts.

Old outdated information: There are four ways to purchase a Property Deed. Backers at Ancestor (Benefactor) and above receive a Rent-Free Property Deed with their pledge. Players can also purchase a Property Deed from other players. Players can buy tickets for the monthly lotteries for player-owned-town-only and place-anywhere deeds. Finally, players can purchase limited amounts of deeds from the Add-On Store. Players are allowed to own multiple lots.

Additionally, in offline mode players can purchase deeds with in-game gold (in addition to claiming any deed they may have as part of their pledge or bundle). Also note that in offline mode, player-owned-town (POT) lot deeds are not limited to player-owned towns, and can be used anywhere.
