The Kobold Steam Launch is a 10-metre iron motorboat powered by a vertical boiler and twin steam engine. Its furnace burns wood or coal to raise a gauge from 0 to 10, increasing speed and acceleration as the fire rises.

Furnace and speed

With the fire banked at gauge level 2, the launch makes about 5 knots. One piece of wood raises the gauge by one level and one chunk of coal by two. The gauge climbs one level every five seconds while fuel burns and falls one level every two minutes. At level 10 the launch reaches about 25 knots and accepts no more fuel; fuel already burning beyond that point strains the hull.

Smoke from the copper funnel grows with the furnace and trails behind the vessel at speed. Engine, furnace, and safety-valve sounds follow the SFX volume setting.
