Death and Resurrection

From Shroud of the Avatar Wiki - SotA

This article needs verification. (Specific reason: Confirm the current automatic-resurrection timer; ghost controls and visibility; ankh and chaos-device behavior; return locations; Health and Focus after each method; repeated-death delay; durability and attribute penalties; and the effects of leaving a scene while dead.)

Help verify this page. You do not need to edit anything.

See the talk page for details.

Death and resurrection describes what happens when the Avatar's Health reaches zero and the ways play can resume. This page covers the Avatar. For pets, see Resurrect Creature; for the Life Magic spell, see Resurrection.

Death and ghost state

At zero Health, the Avatar enters a ghost state. The world changes appearance, ordinary interaction is restricted, and the interface points toward available resurrection options. A resurrection timer may also offer an automatic return if no other method is used.

Older SotAwiki instructions describe NPCs, players, and creatures as lights while the Avatar is a ghost and describe resurrection-device markers growing brighter as the ghost approaches. The current presentation, timer, movement rules, and available interactions are included in this page's verification request.

Ways to return

The established game documentation records several resurrection paths:

Method General behavior Current details to verify
Another player casts Resurrection Returns the Avatar through the Life Magic spell. Casting time, valid targets, return position, Health, Focus, and any protection or penalty
Resurrection Ankh The ghost approaches an ankh to return through a scene resurrection point. Activation distance and delay, repeated-death behavior, return position, Health, Focus, and penalties
Resurrection Chaos A chaos resurrection device returns the Avatar using different placement behavior from a normal ankh. Current random-placement behavior, activation, Health, Focus, and penalties
Automatic resurrection The game returns the Avatar when the timer expires. Timer length, destination, Health, Focus, durability loss, attribute effects, and protection period
Leave the scene while dead Scene transition can force the Avatar to return. Destination and whether its penalties match timer expiration

The previous article stated exact values—including a 300-second timer, five-percent durability loss, and a two-minute Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence reduction—without a current primary citation. Those values are not presented as current rules until verified.

Choosing a method

When another player can safely cast Resurrection, returning near the place of death may help a group recover. A nearby resurrection device may be the clearer option when the encounter area remains dangerous. Automatic return is the fallback, but its current location and penalties should be read from the client warning rather than assumed from older wiki text.

Related death mechanics

Death of the Avatar is separate from Death Magic, Death resistance effects, pet defeat, and item names containing “Death.” Those subjects do not describe the player resurrection workflow and are intentionally omitted from this navigation page.
