Undead, such as the Skeleton, are creatures raised from the dead by magic.
Template:BotA describes the undead as having an abiding hatred of the living. First attempts by the Obsidian sorcerers at raising undead saw the creatures attack anyone. Later attempts exerted more control over them, but only to the point of preventing the undead from attacking allies. They could not be directed or commanded, and were "stupid as posts" outside their own life experiences which made them practically useless as warriors.
