Poison is a form of damage than the Avatar can inflict upon foes, or that the foes can inflict upon the Avatar.
Using Poison on Your Foes
In this game, poison is applied to the avatar's weapon in the Main Hand (i.e. for dual wield, it will not apply poison to the Off Hand weapon, so Offhand Attack will not apply poison on the enemy). While the poison is active on the Avatar's weapon, each melee attack that hits the enemy has a chance to inflict the poison upon the enemy. Poisoning an enemy can occur when using any melee weapon attack skill in Blades, Bludgeon, Polearms, and Ranged trees, and with Sneak Attack in the Subterfuge Skills tree. As stated earlier, Offhand Attack does not apply poison to the enemy.
In order for the Avatar to use Poison against foes, the following criteria must be met:
- The Avatar must learn the Poison Weapon skill in the Subterfuge Skills tree.
- The Poison must be in the Avatar's inventory.
Poison can applied to your weapon by either of the following methods:
- Drag the poison stack from your inventory and drop it onto your Utility Bar. Then, click on the Poison icon in the utility bar to apply the poison to your weapon.
- Right click on the poison in your inventory and select "use item".
Note that there are 2 duration stats that are relevant to each poison:
- Duration that the poison is "active" on your weapon - this duration is how long your weapon will be capable of applying the poison to an enemy, and is determined by the level of your Poison Weapon Skill. After you apply the poison to your weapon, a yellow skull/crossbones/dagger icon will show under your Avatar's health bar. When you hover your mouse over the icon, the pop-up window shows the name of the poison that you have applied to your weapon, and the amount of time that the potion will remain active on your weapon (in seconds). The icon also has a sweeping grey timer that lets you know the approximate duration remaining.
- Duration of the poison's effect on the enemy after the enemy is poisoned - this is determined by the effects of the particular poison used (Note: potions have a "Duration: 20 seconds" in their tool tip info, which is incorrect. The correct duration is the time shown next to the effect, such as "1-3 Poison Damage every 3 seconds for 15 seconds"). When a poisoned weapon successfully applies poison to the enemy, a yellow skull/crossbones/dagger icon will appear under the enemy's health bar. When you hover your mouse over the icon, the pop-up window shows the name of the poison that you have applied to your enemy, and the amount of time that the poison will continue to effect the enemy (in seconds). The icon also has a sweeping grey timer that lets you know the approximate duration remaining.
Many of the poisons have effects that will stack a maximum of 3 times if applied multiple times to the enemy (i.e. if the poison is active on your weapon, and you hit the enemy 3 times in a row, the debuff/damage-over-time effect of a poison will be inflicted 3 times simultaneously). Also, you can have multiple poison types applied on an enemy at the same time (so, each party member in a group can be applying a different poison on a boss).

Methods to Increase/Decrease Your Poison Effectiveness
Curing An Avatar or Ally who is Poisoned
The Avatar can cure poison by any of the following methods:
- Consume a Cure Poison Potion - cures poison on self only.
- Cast Purify - will cure poison on one target, either on oneself, a Tamed Pet, a Magic Summons, or a party member.
- Cast Purify Burst - will cure poison on self and on any a Tamed Pets, a Magic Summons, or a party members in the area of effect.
Creatures/Areas Using Poison on the Avatar
Many creatures have the ability to poison the avatar. Also, some adventure zones may have poison fields or poison traps than can poison the Avatar. Poison attacks usually generate damage-over-time on the avatar, but they tend to inflict this damage over a relatively short period of time. So, in many cases, the Avatar can just let the poison's duration expire. However, in cases when the poison damage rate is high or the duration is long, the Avatar can cure the poison (see above).
Creatures that can inflict a poison attack include:
