Gold Crowns of the Obsidians (also known as COTOs) are rare items that can drop from almost any activity, with higher occurrences on higher level creatures and resource nodes. They come in several different metal types, and can be used to restore maximum Durability to items. Each type of COTO can be exchanged for specific types of items, such as Potions of the Obsidians, that grant various temporary boosts to things like carry capacity or gathering speed.
There are two forms of currency in-game:
::* Gold Coins - the main in-game currency. It is accepted by Vendors and used for most purchases.
::* Crowns of the Obsidians (also called COTOs)

There are Crown Merchants which allow you to exchange the various COTO types for Obsidian Potions or Gold COTOs. Gold Crowns of the Obsidians are unique in that they can be sold to any merchant in-game for gold.
So, Crowns of the Obsidians are one type of coin that is used for currency in-game.  COTOs are remnants of the Obsidian Empire.

Lore

Crowns of the Obsidians: These very rare coins left over from the age of the Obsidians can be found occasionally on higher level creatures. In later releases, they can be redeemed with trainers, the oracle, and other locations for blessings.[1]

Blessings of the Obsidians: Collect the incredibly rare Crowns of the Obsidians so that the Obsidian Alchemists in Ardoris, Owl's Head, and Soltown will sell you potions that grant powerful blessings.[2]

Obsidian Crown Merchants: These Merchants only accept the incredibly rare Crowns of the Obsidians (COTOs). COTOs can be found on just about anything that provides loot (monsters, ore nodes, etc) but appear more frequently the higher the difficulty of the target. For now, Obsidian Crown Merchants only sell the Potions of the Obsidians we introduced in Release 29, but we will be expanding their inventory over time to include various exotic and rare items. Trivia

 • When first introduced, COTOs had a value of Template:Gold, but no other use. When their use in repairing gear was introduced, their value was reduced to Template:Gold, before finally being changed to no value after the Gold Crown was placed in the Add-On Store. Their usage in repair and rent is tuned toward roughly an hour of casual play, so that their value is roughly Template:Gold.
 • Physical Crowns of the Obsidians can be purchased from Relics by Rild. (Website can no longer be found)
 • Prior to Release 63, values of CotOs were roughly $1 --> 1 CotO. In Release 63, this was changed to $1 --> 100 CotOs.[4]
 • Formerly, the following other types of crowns were available. These coins were removed in Release 60 in order to consolidate the currency into a single type.
