Ultima Online (aka UO) is technically the first named MMORPG. Richard Garriott coined the term MMORPG and was the primary creative mind behind Ultima Online. DarkStarr is credited with the creation of the game as Garriott has said he would never had made it an online game if not for the foresight and continued pressure from Starr Long. Ultima Online released on 24 September 1997, by Origin Systems. It is still online and playable to this day.
Ultima Online was The first MMORPG to reach the 100,000 subscriber base, far exceeding that of any game that went before it[1].
