Although the timing of the release of ''Ultima Online'' is remarkable, and it seems the Cataclysm might have occurred during the shattering of Mondain's Gem of Immortality, which created the various shards in that game, Lord British has stated that this timing is not intentional. The New Britannian calendar is back-calculated from when the developers began working on the game, January 1, 2013.

Date Calculation Issues

Currently[1] the date calculation in-game is off by one New Britannia day. This causes the base date to calculate from December 21, 2012 @11:00pm, rather than January 1, 2013 @12:00am as originally intended. If this is corrected in the future, the templates used to calculate the date will need to be adjusted by one hour.[2]

If, instead, this issue does not get fixed, we will need to change the base date as noted above, and the Cataclysm date to September 1, 1997 @11:00pm.
