will slow the player and use focus fairly proportionally with the amount they are overloaded. Carrying twice the amount you’re supposed to will cut your movement speed in half and drain focus at a slow rate. Encumbrance will be capped at 3x your base encumbrance; reaching this amount will allow players to move but they can no longer gain items nor gold from looting nor trading.  Running out of focus will prevent movement until the player has a chance to rest and regain some focus.

Template:Infobox Encumbrance refers to the amount of weight you are carrying and how that weight impedes or hinders you. On the paper doll, there is a statistic called "Weight", which is followed by two values that are separated by a "/". The first value is how much weight you are currently carrying. The second value is your Encumbrance Capacity.

Encumbrance Capacity

Encumbrance Capacity is the amount of weight you can carry without suffering a penalty (i.e. carry capacity). For details on this statistic and wha things effect it, see Encumbrance Capacity.

Over-Encumbrance

If the weight you are currently carrying exceeds your encumbrance capacity, then you are considered over-encumbered and you receive penalties (i.e. debuffs).

When you are over-encumbered, a yellow "over-encumbered" icon appears in the upper right of the game screen (see example of icon above). If you hover your mouse of the icon. you will see the debuffs that you have incurred.

There are several tiers of over-encumbrance:

  • Carrying up to 2.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon will not have an exclamation point, your Move Rate slows, and your Dexterity decreases.
  • Carrying over 2.0x your encumbrance capacity - your Move Rate slows, your Dexterity decreases, and your focus regeneration while moving is reduced.
    • Carrying 2.0x to 2.5x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow will not have an exclamation point.
    • Carrying 2.5x to 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a red exclamation point ('!').
    • Carrying more than 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a red exclamation point ('!'), your Move Rate slows, your Dexterity decreases, and your focus regeneration while moving is reduced.

  • Carrying up to 2.5x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon will not have an exclamation point, your Move Rate slows, and your Dexterity decreases.
    • Carrying up to 2.5x to 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a yellow exclamation point (!), your Move Rate slows, your Dexterity decreases, and your focus regeneration while moving is reduced.
    • Carrying more than 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a red exclamation point (!), your Move Rate slows, your Dexterity decreases, and your focus regeneration while moving is reduced.

will slow the player and use focus fairly proportionally with the amount they are overloaded.

This is intended to inconvenience players who are trying to perform what would normally be considered impossible feats of carrying far more than was intended. In any scene with player housing, the speed penalty will be applied but not the focus loss to make carrying very heavy loads within town scenes less painful.

Trivia

  • Encumbrance was first added in Release 14. Previously, players could carry any amount and still move at a decent speed. Focus would slowly drain away at a constant rate, but running out of focus would not prevent movement.
  • Encumbrance was revised significantly for Release 35.
  • The 3x encumbrance cap, and being fully encumbered blocking loot and trade was added for Release 60.
