“Patterns” are used for reshaping items in the game. This system will allow players to change the visual appearance of many items in the game while preserving the functionality and data associated with that item. In the case of a weapon, that means that it will still retain all of its stats including damage per second, durability, enchantments, etc. even though it looks different. Patterns will work on gear and decorations.
A PAGENAME is a document that can by applied to certain items in order to modify the appearance of these items (it only modifies the visual presentation of the item; it does not alter the stats of the item). A pattern document can only be applied to same type of item from which it derived. For example, a Pattern: Skull Sword (which is derived from a one-handed Skull Sword), can only be applied to a one-handed sword. The sword to which the "Pattern: Skull Sword" is applied will take on the appearance of the Skull Sword.

Patterns are used to reshape existing pieces of gear in much the same way you would enchant that gear at a crafting station. You take a weapon or a piece of armor to the appropriate station (ex. Longbow to a carpentry station) and then use a pattern to reshape that item into something visually different. Patterns can be obtained through purchase and from inside the game.
Pattern Types
There are two types of Patterns: a consumed pattern (which is labeled as "Pattern" in-game) and an Eternal Pattern (which is labeled as "Eternal Pattern" in-game).
* Consumed Pattern (also known as a non-eternal pattern) - When a Consumed Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is consumed (destroyed) in the process. When an item with a Consumed Pattern is salvaged, it will  <span style="color:fuchsia">never</span> yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied, so it cannot be recovered upon salvage). Items that have had a Consumed Pattern applied to them will have Orange colored title text. Also, in the information that pops-up when you hover your mouse over the item, the title will show as the Patterned Name followed in paratheses by the original name, such as "Bronze Buckled Gambeson +9 (Bronze Augmented Chainmail Chest Armor +9)".
* Eternal Pattern - When an Eternal Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is preserved and fused with the item. When an item with an Eternal Pattern is salvaged, it will <span style="color:fuchsia">always</span> yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was preserved within the item, so it is always recovered when the item is salvaged). Items with an eternal pattern will state "Salvage Yields: Eternal Pattern:..." in the information that pops-up when you hover your mouse over the item.

Purchased: This includes items from pledges, add-on store, and bundles.
Applying a Pattern
To apply a pattern, you will need to use the appropriate "Reshape" recipe at the appropriate Crafting Station. At the Crafting Station, select the Modifications category, and then select the relevant "Reshape" recipe. The Avatar starts the game with the "Reshape" recipes already in the recipe book.

*Patterns in Pattern Packs: These patterns are consumed when used, so can only be used exactly once. They come in packs of 6 or more.
::{| style="background-color: #444444; color: white; border: 2px solid black; border-collapse: collapse;"
*Eternal Patterns inside Gear: When you buy a suit of armor or a functional weapon (add on store, pledge, bundle, etc) this gear has starter level stats, is non-lootable, is indestructible, and cannot be enchanted/masterworked. If you want to use the item in crafting it can be salvaged for an “Eternal Pattern”. Please note that this forfeits all of its protections from destruction and PVP loot-ability. That eternal pattern can be used just like a regular pattern with the critical difference that it can be recovered by salvaging the item that it was applied to.. This allows anyone who purchased gear or got gear from pledges to make exactly 1 item at a time from their gear if they choose. This also preserves the rarity of those items while allowing them to be used in the crafting system.

Rules for Applying Patterns
* Armor patterns can only be applied to armor worn in the same slot as the item from which the pattern was derived; however, the pattern can be applied to armor of any composition (Cloth, Leather, Chain or Plate). For example, a chest piece pattern can only be applied to a chest piece; however, you can apply a cloth chest piece pattern to a plate chest piece.
* All Back Slot patterns can be applied to any Back Slot item (Cloak, Backpack, Quiver, Wings, etc.).
* One-handed weapon patterns can only be applied to one-handed weapons of the same the weapon type (e.g. a Blade pattern can only be applied to blade weapon, and not to a bludgeon, Ranged, or Polearm weapon).
* Two-handed weapon patterns can only be applied to two-handed weapons of the same the weapon type (e.g. a Bludgeon pattern can only be applied to bludgeon weapon, and not to a blade, Ranged, or Polearm weapon).

In-Game: These are patterns gained from loot in the game. Note that these will be visually distinct from the purchased patterns.
Where to Get Patterns
* Consumed Patterns can be obtained by
** Salvaging equipment items that have not had a pattern applied (these are mainly items obtained as loot from non-player creatures, such as swords, shields, armor, etc.) - when you salvage these items, there is a chance they will yield a consumed pattern.
** Purchase from NPC Merchants
*** Booksellers sell patterns for books.
*** Housing Deeds Merchants sell patterns for vendors and basement entrances.
*** Decorations Merchants sell patterns for chests.
* Eternal Patterns can be obtained by
** Purchased in the Crown Shop in game.
** Salvaging certain special items (such as some pledge items and special event rewards). Salvaging will liberate the patterm, but it will destroy the item.
** Using the Reshape Pattern Remover recipe to remove the eternal pattern from an item. This will liberate the pattern and preserve the item (although the item will revert to its original appearance).

*Patterns inside Gear: These are gained from salvaging gear found on enemies in the game. These will be the primary source of patterns inside the game. We intend to have at least as many of these in-game patterns as there are of the purchased variety, if not more. There will be varying degrees of rarity for these patterns. For instance, katana patterns might be fairly easy to gain by salvaging katanas from bandits along the Perennial Coast, but the pattern for the Dastardly Vile Sword that Nefario the Obsidian Cabalist wields in the Town sieges might be almost impossible to get.
Returning an Item with a Pattern to its Original Appearance (Removing a Pattern)
*Other Patterns: We are also considering having some patterns found directly as loot or available for purchase in game for gold from merchants, but this will be an exception.
Patterns can be removed from an item (without destructively salvaging the item) by using the Reshape Pattern Remover recipe with a Pattern Remover at the appropriate crafting station for the item. The recipes for pattern removal are already in your recipe book when you start the game.
* Consumed Patterns - Removing a consumed pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, but the pattern document is not recovered (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied).
* Eternal Patterns - Removing the pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, and the pattern document is recovered (i.e. the pattern is always preserved upon removal).

Recovering a Pattern that has been Applied to an Item
Crafting: There will be a series of recipes similar to enchantments (with wildcards) with no skill requirement, such that anyone can use these patterns at a crafting station to remake their gear. Everyone will automatically have these recipes in their recipe book as well. The recipes will be based on item type and crafting station type. Reshaping will be restricted to the item type so that you can only reshape a 2-handed sword using a 2-handed sword pattern (i.e. you can’t make a 2-handed sword look like a dagger).
* Consumed Pattern - these patterns cannot be recovered from an item because the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied to the item. Therefore, salvaging the item or using a Pattern Remover will not yield a pattern.

* Eternal Pattern - these can be recovered from by either of the following methods:
Example recipes
**Salvage the item - this will yield the pattern document, but it will destroy the item itself.

**Use a Pattern Remover - this will yield the pattern document, and it will preserve the item itself (i.e. it will not destroy it).

Template:Infobox Item A Pattern is a document that can by applied to certain items in order to modify the appearance of these items (it only modifies the visual presentation of the item; it does not alter the stats of the item).

Pattern Types[edit]

There are two types of Patterns: a consumed pattern (which is labeled as "Pattern" in-game) and an Eternal Pattern (which is labeled as "Eternal Pattern" in-game).

  • Consumed Pattern (also known as a non-eternal pattern) - When a Consumed Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is consumed (destroyed) in the process. When an item with a Consumed Pattern is salvaged, it will never yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied, so it cannot be recovered upon salvage).
  • Eternal Pattern - When an Eternal Pattern is applied to an item, the pattern document is preserved and fused with the item. When an item with an Eternal Pattern is salvaged, it will always yield the pattern document back (i.e. the pattern document was preserved within the item, so it is always recovered when the item is salvaged). Items with an eternal pattern will state "Salvage Yields: Eternal Pattern:..." in the information that pops-up when you hover your mouse over the item.

Applying a Pattern[edit]

To apply a pattern, you will need to use the appropriate "Reshape" recipe at the appropriate Crafting Station. At the Crafting Station, select the Modifications category, and then select the relevant "Reshape" recipe. The Avatar starts the game with the "Reshape" recipes already in the recipe book.

Returning an Item with a Pattern to its Original Appearance (Removing a Pattern)[edit]

Patterns can be removed from an item (without destructively salvaging the item) by using the Reshape Pattern Remover recipe with a Pattern Remover at the appropriate crafting station for the item. The recipes for pattern removal are already in your recipe book when you start the game.

  • Consumed Patterns - Removing a consumed pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, but the pattern document is not recovered (i.e. the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied).
  • Eternal Patterns - Removing the pattern will make the item revert to its original appearance, and the pattern document is recovered (i.e. the pattern is always preserved upon removal).

Recovering a Pattern that has been Applied to an Item[edit]

  • Consumed Pattern - these patterns cannot be recovered from an item because the pattern document was permanently destroyed when it was applied to the item. Therefore, salvaging the item or using a Pattern Remover will not yield a pattern.
  • Eternal Pattern - these can be recovered from by either of the following methods:
    • Salvage the item - this will yield the pattern document, but it will destroy the item itself.
    • Use a Pattern Remover - this will yield the pattern document, and it will preserve the item itself (i.e. it will not destroy it).

Trivia[edit]

  • Patterns were added for Release 39 and were focused on Patterns for gear (armor and weapons).
  • To celebrate the launch of the Patterns system, we are releasing our first pattern the Ornate Flamberge for a limited time! Our very own Fletcher “Skullmuncher” Kinnear designed this beautiful sword and it will only be available through the end of the Spring Telethon. Flamberge Pattern Packs, as well as the weapon itself (with the eternal pattern inside), will be available for purchase in the Add-On Store.[1]
  • In release 86, the restrictions of patterns on specific armor types and cloak slot item types was removed. Weapons however are still restricted to the specific weapon type (Ranged, Bludgeon, Blades and Polearm).[2]
