Encumbrance refers to the amount of weight that you are carrying and how that weight impedes or hinders you. On the Character Sheet and on the Inventory window, there is a statistic called "Weight", which is followed by two values that are separated by a "/". The first value is your Encumbrance (i.e. how much weight you are currently carrying). The second value is your Encumbrance Capacity. =Encumbrance Capacity= Encumbrance Capacity (i.e. carry capacity) is the amount of weight you can carry without suffering a penalty. For details on this statistic and what things effect it, see Encumbrance Capacity. =Over-Encumbrance= If the weight you are carrying exceeds your encumbrance capacity, then you are over-encumbered and you receive penalties (i.e. debuffs are applied and you cannot teleport or recall using a scroll). When you are over-encumbered, a yellow "over-encumbered" icon appears in the upper right of the game screen (see example of the icon above). If you hover your mouse over the icon, you will see the debuffs that you have incurred. The greater your over-encumbrance, the greater the debuffs you receive. In other words, the more overloaded you are, the more it will negatively effect your avatar. There are several tiers of over-encumbrance: * Carrying 1.01x to 2.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon will not have an exclamation point; the penalties are a slower Move Rate and reduced Dexterity. * Carrying over 2.0x your encumbrance capacity - the penalties are a slower Move Rate, reduced Dexterity, and continuous Focus drain while moving. NOTE: In any scene with player housing, the Move Rate and Dexterity penalty are applied, but the focus drain is not applied (which makes carrying very heavy loads within a town less painful). The following subdivisions of this tier are recognized: ** Carrying 2.0x to 2.5x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon will not have an exclamation point. ** Carrying 2.5x to 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a yellow exclamation point (!). ** Carrying more than 3.0x your encumbrance capacity - the yellow icon has a red exclamation point (!). When you have reached this encumbrance level, you cannot gain items from looting or trading. The penalties applied for over-encumbrance are intended to inconvenience players who are trying to perform what would normally be considered impossible feats of carrying far more than was intended. If the player runs out of focus from the focus drain, the player cannot move until some focus is regained. ==Trivia== *Encumbrance was first added in Release 14. Previously, players could carry any amount and still move at a decent speed. Focus would slowly drain away at a constant rate, but running out of focus would not prevent movement. *Encumbrance was revised significantly for Release 35. *The 3x encumbrance cap, and being fully encumbered blocking loot and trade was added for Release 60. ==External Links== *Encumbrance Changes (R35) on SotA Forum *R60 Change: Being Fully Encumbered Will Block Loot & Trade on SotA Forum
